Salzgitter – World Record Efficiency of Sunfire’s High-Temperature Electrolyzer

About the case

Status: Operation
Customer / Project Partners: Salzgitter Mannesmann
Product: Sunfire-HyLink SOEC
Use case: Hydrogen for Green Steel

Sunfire-HyLink SOEC | 720 kW

  • 720 kW solid oxide electrolyzer
  • Up to 18 kg/h green hydrogen
  • Commissioned in 2020
  • Salzgitter, Germany

Hydrogen for Green Steel

  • GrInHy2.0 Project
  • H2 is injected into the H2-ringline of the iron-and-steel work
  • H2 is used as reducing agent for steel annealing processes and hot-dip galvanizing
  • Steam generated by off-heat enables highest efficiency
  • Proven world record efficiency of 84 %LHV/AC

This project has received funding from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking (now Clean Hydrogen Partnership) under grant agreement No 826350. This Joint Undertaking receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe research.
