Sunfire Starts the Construction of Its Research and Development Center

German electrolyzer manufacturer is investing around €30 million in its Dresden headquarters over the next few years. The first excavators arrive to officially start work on the extension to the R&D center.

Dresden, November 15, 2023 | The future is about to unfold at Sunfire’s headquarters. Over the next five years, the electrolyzer company will build a state-of-the-art research and development center, including prototype manufacturing.

To date, the hydrogen company has not only its headquarters in Dresden, Germany, but also a production facility. This is where Sunfire manufactures its innovative high-temperature SOEC electrolyzers that produce green hydrogen. These have already been installed at industrial partners such as RWE, Salzgitter AG and Neste.

“When we start serial production, we will manufacture our SOEC electrolyzers at another site – just as we do with our pressurized alkaline technology. In Dresden, however, we will focus on the further development of our technologies,” says Sunfire CEO Nils Aldag.

New facilities are being built on the Sunfire site for prototyping and testing the systems developed here. Projects with industrial customers from all over Europe are also managed from Dresden.

Sunfire employs more than 500 people, 400 of them at the headquarters, and the number is growing. “Overall, we will more or less double in Dresden. This applies to both the number of employees and the size of the site,” adds Nils Aldag. Concrete plans will be presented in due course.

Nils Aldag explains the company’s commitment to the location: “In Dresden we find excellent conditions for growth: Well-trained talent, a first-class research landscape, strong industrial partnerships and political support. That’s the reason for our expanded commitment.”
