The German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs & Energy (BMWi) and the German Federal Ministry of Transport & Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) have named 62 large-scale hydrogen projects to receive government funding. Sunfire is one of the companies selected.
The scaling plans of the leading electrolysis company Sunfire are getting another boost: The German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs & Energy (BMWi) and the German Federal Ministry of Transport & Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) have selected 62 large-scale hydrogen projects to be supported as part of a joint European hydrogen project (Hydrogen IPCEI – Important Projects of Common European Interest). Together with four other companies from Saxony, Sunfire was selected for the next stage of the funding process. In total, more than 230 applications were submitted.
“This is excellent news for us. As a manufacturer of industrial electrolyzers, we are currently in a hot growth phase. Our innovative systems are ready for large-scale production. To scale, we need to invest now. The German government’s funding will help us to realize our scaling plans.” – NILS ALDAG, CEO SUNFIRE
With the funding, the German government is implementing an important measure of the National Hydrogen Strategy. “We are taking a major step on the road to climate neutrality”, Peter Altmaier announced in a press release. The German Minister of Economic Affairs & Energy focuses on the steel and chemical industries, “where several million tons of CO2 can be saved annually through IPCEI hydrogen projects.” Sunfire, whose electrolyzers are producing hydrogen for companies in both sectors, is contributing to achieving this goal.
The German projects are being funded as part of a European project together with up to 22 European partner countries. The projects are expected to be approved by the European Commission under state aid law before the end of this year. The BMWi, the BMVI and the federal states are providing a total of eight billion euros.

Sunfire is a global leader in the production of industrial electrolyzers based on pressurized alkaline and solid oxide (SOEC) technologies. With its electrolysis solutions, Sunfire is addressing a key challenge of today’s energy system: Providing renewable hydrogen and syngas as climate-neutral substitutes for fossil energy. Sunfire’s innovative and proven electrolysis technology enables the transformation of carbon-intensive industries that are currently dependent on fossil-based oil, gas, or coal. The company employs more than 650 people located in Germany and Switzerland.
