2024 was a year of partnerships, innovation, and growth – Sunfire is driving the future of the green hydrogen economy forward.
Dresden, December 19, 2024 – German electrolysis pioneer Sunfire wraps up the year with an order backlog exceeding 800 megawatts, reflecting a year defined by growth, innovation, and strong partnerships. In the coming year, Sunfire will further advance its vision of a world without fossil fuels – dedicated to providing its customers with the best electrolysis technologies for large-scale green hydrogen production.
Dresden: A Hub for Hydrogen Expertise
The start of 2024 marks the launch of the “HyDresden” initiative. Headquartered in Dresden, Sunfire is based in one of Europe’s leading hydrogen regions, where research, development, and industrial implementation are closely integrated. Through this initiative, Sunfire is working to enhance the global visibility of Saxony’s capital as a pioneer and innovator in green hydrogen technologies.
Groundbreaking Financing for Building the Hydrogen Economy
In March, Sunfire announced the completion of its Series E equity financing round (€215 million) and secured a term loan of up to €100 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB). In addition, the company has access to approx. €200 million from previously approved, undrawn grant funding. In total, Sunfire secured more than €500 million to accelerate its growth, positioning itself as one of the best capitalized electrolyzer manufacturers in the industry.
Full Focus on Electrolysis
In spring, Sunfire announced the decision to spin off its fuel cell business, Sunfire Fuel Cells. This move allows the company to focus exclusively on its electrolysis business and its leading technologies – the pressurized alkaline and high-temperature SOEC electrolysis – and to drive their development and scaling forward.
Realizing Large-Scale Hydrogen Projects in Germany and Across Europe
In 2024, Sunfire reaffirmed its commitment to providing reliable industrial electrolysis technologies that enable customers to achieve a green transformation. In April, the electrolysis specialist announced the launch of a FEED study for a 500 MW large-scale green hydrogen project in Europe.
RWE continues its strong collaboration with Sunfire. In August, alongside the existing Sunfire SOEC plant at its Lingen site, RWE and Sunfire celebrated the commissioning of a 10 MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer. A month later, Sunfire secured a major order from RWE for a 100 MW industrial electrolyzer, also to be installed at the Lingen hydrogen hub.
Another key milestone was reached in spring 2024 in Bad Lauchstädt with the topping out ceremony for the building housing Sunfire’s 30 MW large-scale electrolyzer.
Sunfire also achieved significant milestones in Finland. In February, the company celebrated the successful installation of Finland’s first industrial scale electrolyzer. At the end of the year, Sunfire turned its attention north again: Ren-Gas recognizes Sunfire’s exceptional capabilities and commitment to green hydrogen production, announcing it has selected Sunfire as its electrolysis equipment supplier for the Tampere project in Finland.
Cleantech Leadership – Made in Europe
Germany and Europe are engaged in a global competition for leadership in the production of clean technologies. To ensure fair competition and to strengthen the European value chain, Sunfire calls for the adoption of resilience criteria. A major milestone was reached in September when the European Commission announced the introduction of these criteria in the second auction round of the European Hydrogen Bank – a significant step toward strengthening European technologies. The focus for 2025 is to embed these criteria into additional funding programs and national initiatives.
Electrolysis. Delivred. At Scale.
Reliability, strong partnerships, and close collaboration with project partners are the foundation of Sunfire’s success – reflected in the industrial follow-up orders and successful collaborations that have defined 2024. The path for 2025 is clear: With focus, determination, and full commitment, Sunfire will continue to drive the industrial scaling of green hydrogen – staying true to its mission: Electrolysis. Delivered. At Scale.
Here’s to a successful 2025!
Sunfire is a global leader in the production of industrial electrolyzers based on pressurized alkaline and solid oxide (SOEC) technologies. With its electrolysis solutions, Sunfire is addressing a key challenge of today’s energy system: Providing renewable hydrogen and syngas as climate-neutral substitutes for fossil energy. Sunfire’s innovative and proven electrolysis technology enables the transformation of carbon-intensive industries that are currently dependent on fossil-based oil, gas, or coal. The company employs more than 650 people located in Germany and Switzerland.
